Dashaur Lake Trek

Dashaur Lake is located in the North of Kullu and Manali town. Dashaur Lake is on a spur branching from the Pir Panjal Range west of Rohtang Pass. Dashaur Lake is at an altitude of around 4200 m (14000 feet). Dashaur Lake trek is a day trek that can be completed in 4 to 5 hours from the base camp at Manali/ Kothi or Marhi. 

It is a short trip that can be completed in a day with Manali serving as a base camp. Dashaur Lake is also known by several names like Dashir, Sarkund and Sheela Sar. From Manali reach Marhi, a busy place in summers with several dhabas offering Indian, Chinese, and Tibetan food to the tourists making their way to the Rohtang Pass. The dhabas also provide shelter and for those carrying tents, there is abundant space to pitch them.

Dashaur Lake is located on the ridge of the left (west) of Rohtang Pass. From Marhi, follow the motor road climbing to Rohtang pass just short of the last loop before Rahni nallah on the Manali – Leh road. From here it is a stiff climb to the north. The trek is not clear but one can reach the lake if one aims at the saddle that is visible. However, hiring a guide is a good option.

The path goes up a southern spur branching off the main Pir Panjal range to the west of Rohtang Pass. The path is not marked or defined but the location of the lake is on the saddle straight above (north). The saddle is visible after a climb of nearly half an hour. Thereafter walk up keeping the location of the saddle in mind. Shi, the stone cairns put up by local people and shepherds serve as useful indicators of the direction of the route.

After reaching the lake you can have the mesmerizing view of the Manali Valley. From this lake, you can also have a view of Lord Gehpan Peak which is 5870 m and Mount Hanuman Tibba which is 5960 m. This little lake is a perfect place for meditation and relaxing. During the month of September, maximum local people come here and it is believed that the water of Dashaur Lake is very curative with healing power and cure from many illnesses. The place is also ideal for camping and exploring the mountains.

You can pitch your tent near Dashaur Lake if you want to stay there. But for that, you need all the necessary and essential equipment and clothing. Even you are not planning to stay there but still, you need some essential equipment like trekking shoes, pair of socks, woolen cloths, raincoat, water bottle, and trekking pole is always required for trekking.

Dashaur Lake trek can easily complete on the same day if you start it from Rohtang Pass, but if you are nature lover and love to spend more days in mountains you can start this trek from Kothi Village. After staying on a night in Kothi Village trek through the old tribal route to Lahaul Spiti up to Marhi. Stay one night at Marhi. Next day Marhi to Dashaur Lake this is 5 – 6 hours trek and stay near the lake. And after exploring the lake and nature return back to Rohtang Pass and from there you can take your vehicle. You have to arrange the vehicle prior to the trek if you want a vehicle at Rohtang Pass as there is always a network problem or may face communication problems.
