Hamta Pass Manali

Hamta Pass is not only famous for its scenic beauty but also for the treks which start from Manali. For adventure lovers, Hamta Pass is a perfect destination to discover and explore nature. And one of the best and short treks in Manali. Manali to Hamta Pass is single day trek but if you want to cover Spiti region and Chandra Taal Lake than at least 4-5 days are required. Hamta Pass is at 14380 feet and on the way, there is a beautiful forest of the maple tree and Himalayan Birch tree or Bhojpatra tree in Hindi. The bark of Bhojpatra tree in ancient times used for writing scripture and texts.

 Earlier there was no road connectivity for Hamta Pass, but after the construction of A. D. Hydro Project is easily approachable by road. Distance from Manali to Hamta Pass is around 20 kms. The road is up to a place called Jobra from where the water of the river is channeled for Hydro Project. On the way, there is a small beautiful village called Sethan where some tea stalls are also available. Nearest places for accommodation are Hotels in Manali but you can also get Home Stay option in Sethan Village.

“According to local residents and some books of Himachal Tourism, legend associated with Hamta Pass is that the soul of people travels to heaven or hell on this route. Mount Indrasan is said to be the gateway to the other World. Many people say that they hear happy and sad voices here. Happy voices and trumpets signify that a person is going to heaven whereas the crying sounds signify that the person on the way to hell. Another legend is that Pandavas had sown rice here during exile. That place is called Pandu Ropa and till now you can find these fields there”.

 Moving further from Jobra next place is called Balu Ka Gera whose one side is high rock mountain and other side is beautiful meadows and between them a water stream flowing between the mountain and meadows. Balu Ka Gera is the best place for camping and spending the night here. You can also see lots of shepherds and their flock nearby Hamta Pass and during winter season they move down the hill as the road is closed due to heavy snowfall. The slopes of the meadows are perfect for skiing and when the road is closed adventure activities lover come here by helicopter and enjoy heli-skiing too.

Shanghar – The Hidden Destination

Village Shanghar is the real example of one of the hidden destinations of India. Shanghar is the untouched emerging destination. The name of the Village Shanghar is by virtue of The Lord Shangchul. The story behind this is that Lord Shangchul had come from the Sangla Village of Kinnaur Valley to overcome the terror of devil souls and for the welfare of villagers of Shanghar. In actual, the Lord Shangchul is a snake who takes place on the right hand of Lord Shiva and who carries toxic flies in his mouth instead of snake venom. These flies in a local language called ‘Raiis’ hence called ‘Raiinaag’ also.

When Lord came from Sangla, the king of Kinnaur Valley also used to come with Lord in order to see off Lord at Shanghar. The first place in that huge ground of village Shanghar where the King of Kinnaur used to sit first and after that, this place is dedicated forever for the King and even for the single soul of the Kinnaur Valley. And it is also often said that this huge ground of 250 bighas were made and crafted by Pandavas during their exile period (Agayat vas) and hence there is not even a single stone in this ground.

When Lord Shangchul arrived at this ground, on arrival he announced that this ground is for cattle’s and ‘Bharmins’ of Shanghar Village and even making of noise, using abusing words and entrance of Police is strictly prohibited.

In the next half of the story, there is a history that the lovers feel themselves protected in this village with the blessing of Lord Shangchul and all villagers in respect to Lord, provide everything of the use like shelter, food, cloth etc. to lovers or we can say the place is beyond any law.

Every year in the month of February and June villagers celebrate Village fair which are dedicated to Lord Shangchul and which attracts people and tourists from all over the world. And in real sense, Shanghar is the hidden destination of Kullu Valley.

Chandra Taal Lake

Chandra Taal is one of the most beautiful lakes in Himachal Pradesh. Chandra Taal is located in Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh which is home of high peaks, huge glaciers, passes, monasteries, temples , lakes and also origin of two large rivers called Chandra and Bhaga. Both rivers meet at Tandi village of Lahaul and Spiti later assumes as river Chenab.

Beautiful Chandra Taal Lake is the source of river Chandra. Chandra means moon and tall means lake. Lake has 2.5km of circumferences and the crystal clear blue looking water attracts lots of nature lover, photographer and trekkers from all over world. Lake is situated at 4300 meters. This lake was discovered by traders from Tibet and Ladhak region who take night halt near the lake during their journey. But now because of its beauty lake is developed as a prefect tourist destination.

Chandra Taal lake is around 120 km away from Manali, but it takes around 5 – 6 hrs to reach due to bad road conditions. Route of Chandra Taal lake mostly remains open between the month of June to September depends upon the weather conditions. Few camping sites are available near lake, but due to limited accommodation maximum traveler visit this lake in a single day from Manali or Kaza.

Bijli Mahadev – Temple of Lightning

Bijli Mahadev Temple, as the name suggests is the temple of Lord Shiva, where almost every year lightning strikes the Shiva Linga and breaks into pieces. Then the priest of the temple rejoins the pieces of Lingam with the help of butter and other adhesive. Because of this lightning and rejoining process, Bijli Mahadev is also called Temple of Lightning. 

The place where the temple is situated is called Mathana (7874 ft.). The beautiful temple is surrounded by lush green meadows.

The statue and idol near the temple are also the main attraction of tourist who came here from all across the world. And in the month of Saawan (one of the Hindu month) people offer ghee, butter, and milk to these idols and worship Lord Shiva.

Temple is easily approachable from Kullu. 14km of the motorable road from Kullu to Chansari Village and from Chansari 2km trek in the shadow of tall pine trees. And one who cannot trek can come from Naggar to Bijli Mahadev road via Janna Waterfall. Bijli Mahadev is around 70 kilometers from Manali.

Anjani Mahadev Temple Manali

Anjani Mahadev Temple is a holy temple dedicated to Devi Anjana (Mother of Lord Hanuman) in Manali. The main attraction of Anjani Mahadev Temple is ice Lingam formed by flowing water from the mountain. It is said that Devi Anjana meditated at this place. So the place is called Anjani Mahadev.  

During winters when temperature decreases and the water flowing from the mountains fall at a particular point and at the same time due to minus temperature, water freezes and formed a Lingam shape. Some time Lingam attains height up to 20 to 30 feet. The formation of Lingam is the same as it is in Amarnath. So it is also called Amarnath of Kullu or Chota Amarnath.

Thousand of tourists and local devotees visit Anjani Mahadev during mid of December to mid of April. Especially during Shivratri number of devotees offers their prayers and takes a holy bath near the temple.

Anjani Mahadev is around 2 km from Solang Valley. Distance fo Anjani Mahadev is around 15 km from Manali. There is 40 minutes uphill trek and also horses and taxi are available at Solang valley which takes the number of visitors daily to Anjani Mahadev. Even you can enjoy mountain bikes ride towards Anjani Mahadev.

Prashar Lake

Prashar Lake is named after the sage Prashar. Prashar Lake is around 50km from Mandi District of Himachal Pradesh and approximately 102km from Manali via Kullu, Bhuntar and Bajaura. It is said that Sage Prashar used to meditate near this lake.

There is three-storied temple of Sage Prashar which is also in Pagoda style. The main attraction of the lake is the small floating island which rotates seasonally. Lake is covered with fencing and nobody is allowed to ride over the floating island except for the Deity “Shree Vardha Naag” who rides over the island during some the special case when it is stuck.

Beautiful mountain range of Manali and Bijli Mahadev are also visible from here. Every year fair is organized here from 13th to 15th June and Deities from the surrounding area make their presence. It is the most preferred picnic spot of school and college students, families, and groups and even it is a trekking paradise for the nature lover.

Parashar Lake is easily cover in the same day, but if anybody wants to stay here, PWD and Forest Guest House is available here and also can arrange accommodation at nearby villages.

Educational Qualification and eligibility criteria for Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports Manali - Training Programme and Courses:

1. Educational Qualification

i) Minimum 10+2 pass for Methods of Instruction Courses in Mountaineering, Skiing and Water Sports.

ii) Matriculation or above (except for Service / Armed Forces personnel) for Basic and Advance Mountaineering courses. Knowledge of English and Hindi are essential.

 2. Course fee:

The course fee, mentioned in the “TRAINING PROGRAMME FOR THE YEAR 2017 ONWARDS”, includes accommodation in hostel/ tents in the training area/ field; food and training.

3.Travel expenses:

Participants (trainees) have to pay for their travel expenses on their own from their home to the Institute / Regional Centre/ Sub Centre (place of training) and back to their home.

4. Selection:

Candidates are selected for the courses on “first come first served” basis, subject to fulfillment of all conditions.

5. Discipline:

a) All the training courses and programs are conducted by the ABVIMAS at its Manali headquarters and Regional and Sub Centers in Himachal Pradesh on army pattern. Therefore, participants of all training courses and programs must maintain the discipline of the highest order. In case of any misconduct, misbehavior or indulgence in intoxication and anti-social activity, the trainee concerned will be expelled from the course instantly, legal action initiated against him/ her and no refund of fee will be made in such disciplinary cases.

b) If any trainee is absent from the Course/ Programme for more than 2 days in 26/28 days courses and 1 day in any short duration course/ the program, he will be disqualified.

c) Late arrival for joining the course will be allowed only in case of train/ bus arriving late due to adverse weather conditions, landslides, accident, strike or any other unavoidable reasons including death or serious illness of a family member or relative or examination/interview etc. A trainee will be allowed to join the course late by maximum 2 (two) days only.

6. Physical conditioning/ Fitness:

All trainees must be physically fit for their respective courses and a medical certificate from a recognized MBBS/ GAMS Doctor should be deposited at the Institute before joining any course. All activities conducted by the Institute are physically demanding. Trainees must ensure that before joining any course, they should do long walks, jogging and running along with warm-up and cooling down exercises and breathing exercises (yoga).

7. Identity Card:

A photo fixed identity card will be issued to the participants/trainees. It will be valid for availing all the facilities while in the Institute, Regional Centre/ sub-center.

9. Procedure for booking of seats/courses:

The photo fixed application form complete in all respects with one spare photograph, medical certificate and copy of bath certificate should be submitted at least 45 days prior to the commencement of the course applied for along with full course fee by Demand Draft / RTGS/ NEFT/ ESC payable at the Kangra Central Co-operative Bank Ltd., Manali -175131 H.P. Bank Code 035, IFSC Code KACE0000035 payable in saving bank account No. 50055073959 and drawn / deposit in favor of Director, ABVIMAS, Manali or in favor of Incharge of the Centre where you are interested to attend the course/program.

The courses covered under code No. 003 and 007 are conducted in the Lahaul Valley, across the Rohtang Pass. Therefore, the participants are requested to bring RS.1000/- extra towards bus fare from Manali to the place and back Manali. The course fee will be 30% extra for the activities conducted at Mountaineering sub-center Jispa and Mountaineering sub-center Bharmour.

Participants of skiing courses organized at Solang have to arrange transportation for them to reach Solang and back Manali.

For Foreign National Only: - Foreign Nationals are not required to deposit the course fee in advance. Seats in all courses can be provisionally booked by sending the Application form, Medical Certificate, a copy of Passport and a copy of the Educational Certificate. Fee can be remitted at the time of enrollment at ABVIMAS Manali. 

10. Refund of Course Charges:

The course charges paid by a trainee must be utilized by him/her before 31st March of the following year failing which no refund will be made and the course charges deposited will be forfeited for causing financial the loss to Institute and its Centers and loss of opportunity to other candidates. If he/ she are not able to utilize the seat allotted for a particular course then he/she will be entitled to undergo the next course in the line or nay other course subject to the condition that he/she will have to pay the difference before attending the other course having different course charges. However, if a trainee reserves a set in course having more course charges and attends a course having fewer course charges with the 31st March of the following year then the difference of the course charges will be refunded by the Institute. In case of refund course charges on an individual’s request within the time it will be made after the deduction of 25% amount of the charged course charges.

11. Age Limit:

The different age limit has been prescribed for different courses keeping in view the nature of training. The age of a participant for a course will be considered as on 1st January of the year in which he/she is to attend the course. Therefore the participants are advised to submit an attested copy of their birth certificate along with the application form.

12. Checklist:

Participants must ensure that the following documents are submitted by them for securing a seat on the course of their choice:

i) Application form and medical certificate complete in all respects.

ii) Photocopy of the demand draft/ RTGS/NEFT/ ESC by which the fee has been paid.

iii) Attested copy of the birth certificate.

iv)  Attested copy of the educational qualification certificate.

13. Confirmation about the reservation of Seat / Course applied for:

The Institute or the Regional Centre / sub-center, where one want to undergo the course, will intimate the reservation of seat/course applied for or rejection of the application, as the case may be telephonically or through letter/email. Applicants must, therefore, write their phone / mobile number / E-mail ID on the application form besides complete postal address.

14. How to Reach:

Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports Manali.

The participants can reach by bus/ taxi from New Delhi, Ambala, Chandigarh, Kalka, Kiratpur and Pathankot railway stations. The Institute is located near village Aleo on the Manali – Kullu left bank road at a distance of 3 kilometers from the Manali bus stand. Taxi car and auto-rickshaw are available at the bus stand. Those traveling by air can reach Manali by taking bus or taxi from the Kullu –Manali Airport (known as Bhuntar Airport) from where Manali is at a distance of only 41 km. The Institute staff will be also glad to provide the required information on the telephone as well.

15. What to bring with you:

Certain essential training equipment and clothing items are provided by the Institute, Regional Centre or sub-center where one wants to attend the course. However, the participants are required certain articles personally which are mentioned on the website under the title “what personal articles to bring with you for the course”. These items can be carried from home or purchased locally at the place of training on arrival.

16. Important:

Participants are advised to go through the information / instructions carefully for filling and sending the application form.

i) One should start the journey only after receiving confirmation from the Institute / Regional Centre / sub-center concerned.

ii) Head Quarter Institute / Regional Centre / sub-center concerned will not be responsible for the postal delay concerning receipt of application as well as confirmation/ reservation of the seat of course if any.

Jogini Waterfall Manali

Jogini waterfall is one of the most beautiful waterfalls around Manali. Jogini waterfall trek is also in the main checklist of tourists visiting Manali. Jogini’s are the Goddess who lives in the mountains and it is also said that Goddess Jogini operates all activities related to nature like drought, rain, earthquake, flood, etc. This waterfall is dedicated to Goddess Jogini. Temples and shrines of Jogini are also found in other parts of Himalayas.

 Local villagers still follow their rites and on special occasions, they come here and offer prayers to Goddess Jogini and perform rituals. They prepare food near temple premises and eat food on stone plates.

It is clearly written on signboard near the temple that this is the Sanctum of Goddess Jogini and it is a totally silent zone, hence shouting, yelling, and digging of soil and even entry with leather shoes are strictly prohibited here. Even the flowing water, each and every stone and boulder under and around the waterfall is scared. This is a meditation area and you can find lots of people meditating here.

A few years back mini Hydro projects on Jogini waterfall also face religious protest by thousands of local residents. And currently, construction work is of the project is closed due to heavy protests.

Now a day’s Jogini waterfall is not only a meditation area but also a favorite short trek for the young generation. Not only domestic tourists but the number of foreign tourists visits this holy place every year. One can reach this beautiful waterfall from Vashisht Village or from Bhang Village which is hardly 3 km from Manali.

So please maintain the sanctity of the place while you visit this holy Jogini waterfall.

Rohtang Permit online procedure

Online Rohtang Permit is required for all tourist vehicles visiting Rohtang Pass. After the order of the National Green Tribunal, only 1200 tourist vehicles are permitted to Rohtang Pass per day. And all tourist vehicles visiting beyond Rohtang Pass like Leh, Keylong, Spiti, and Pangi, etc also required Rohtang permit. The official site to get online permission is www.rohtangpermits.nic.in. Below is the Rohtang permit online procedure to get Rohtang permits easily.

This post is about the online procedure of Rohtang Permit and congestion charges to be paid while obtaining Rohtang Permit. And also another alternatives way if you are not able to get Rohtang Permit and refund procedure if the fee is deducted and the permit is not issued.

Permit Fee for Rohtang Permit online procedure (Applicable for those visiting Rohtang Pass for tourism purpose):-

This is applicable for all vehicles visiting Rohtang pass for tourism purposes. This tax is applicable on a daily basis and accordingly, the permits are issued based on daily quota defined by National Green Tribunal (NGT)/District Administration. The tourism permit is valid for one day only (To & Fro).

• Daily Permit Limit:
(I) Petrol Vehicles = 800
(ii) Diesel Vehicles = 400

• The permits can be obtained online in two-time frames:
(I) 10:00 hrs (200 Diesel and 400 Petrol)
(ii) 16:00 hrs (200 Diesel and 400 Petrol)

• In a week (Tuesday to Monday) only 3 permits can be obtained for each vehicle.
No Vehicles are allowed on TUESDAY as the day is marked for maintenance of Rohtang Pass.

Permits can only be applied for the next 6 days from the current date.

Printout is compulsory for all permissions.
• Vehicles having wrong information on the permit as compared to valid proofs will not be allowed to cross the barrier.

Congestion Charges:-
This is applicable to all vehicles crossing Gulaba Bridge. This tax is paid on a daily basis and is valid for one day only (To & Fro).

1.      Introduction:

The web application is a simple interface to apply and generate Tourism permits to go to Rohtang. The detail of such permit is under:-

·          Permit to Visit Rohtang

 All the travelers who are desired to visit the Rohtang for Tourism purpose are issued with such permits. This type of permits is issued daily and can be applied in advance to plan your journey to visit Manali and Rohtang. This type of permit is issued as a Vehicle once in a day.

·         The permits issues are duly verified by the authority at various checkpoints on the way to Rohtang and beyond Rohtang. The failure or illegal practice may attract legal action against the wrongdoers. The permits issued are quota based and are issued on first come first serve bases.

2.      Rohtang Permit online procedure

·          Applying for Tourism permit to Rohtang.

 To apply for the Tourism permit for Rohtang traveler has to follow the following steps:-

a.    Choose the Permit

 The first thing is to choose the date for which the permit is applied for after clicking on the Change permit date.

b.     Add the following details in the form:-

i.              Vehicle Number

ii.             Vehicle Registration Date (It should not more than ten years from the date of applying)

iii.            Driver Name

iv.            Mobile Number (The OTP for successful generation of permit and permit SMS is sent on this number)

v.             Email Id (Is supplied an email with OTP and permit details are sent on this email address)

vi.            Purpose (Tourism in this case)

vii.           Vehicle Type (Car, Jeep, Truck, etc)

viii.         Fuel Type (Diesel, Petrol)

ix.            Location (Rohtang in this case)

x.            Vehicle Category (Taxi, HRTC, Official, etc)

c.     After filling up the details the user has to submit the form.

d.     After submitting the form the user has to enter the OTP sent on given mobile/email address in the following screen

e.     After entering the Correct OTP a permit is generated.

f.      The same can be printed by clicking the print link on the top of the permit details screen.

g.     After entering the valid OTP the flow is redirected for payment of fees/charge at Payment Gateway.

h.     After making the successful payment the user is redirected to print permit screen from here the user can take a print out of the permit issued.

3.     To reprint a generated permit

In case the permit generated is to be reprinted the user has to use the third link on the home screen. Here the user has to enter either Permit Number or the combination of permit date and the vehicle registration number in the following screen:-

 After submitting the form the permit detail screen is displayed and permits can be printed from the print link on the top of the screen.

4.    To check the validity of the permit.

The permits validity can be checked at any instance of time. This can be done by entering the permit number on the following screen and after submitting the same permit can be validated.

Do’s and Don’ts: The Web application caters to the needs of mainly two types of users one is the user who is interested in visiting Rohtang for tourism purpose and another type of user is the one who is interested in the places beyond Rohtang (like Leh Keylong etc.). So, in the same manner, there are two types of permits issued by this web interface.

Refund Policy for Rohtang Permits

The Permit is issued only after the receipt of the “Payment Confirmation Response” from the payment gateway.

The fee once paid is not refundable.

For all refund related queries and refund claims (for failed transactions only), if you don't receive any refund within 72 hours of your transaction, and then send an Email to rohtangrefunds@gmail.com. No refund request for the successful transactions will be entertained. If anyone found guilty, penal action will be taken against the same accordingly.  Answer: If such a scenario exists then keep on looking on the status as there may be chances where requests are not matured and still the permits can be left.

5.    Can I reprint the Rohtang permits?

Answer: Yes, there is an option available on the interface where a user can reprint his/her permit by providing the permit date and vehicle number.

6.    Is there any option available for canceling the issued Rohtang permits?

Answer: No, as per the administrative decision there is no facility to cancel the Rohtang permit once issued.

7.    How many permits can I print from my PC/ Mobile?

Answer: A maximum of 2 permits per device/IP-address is allowed in order to cater to the public at large.
