Kalka Shimla Toy Train

Kalka Shimla Toy Train is one of the most scenic train journeys in India which was built by the British in 1903 to provide access to their summer capital Shimla. The Kalka Shimla railway line is not only popular for its scenic beauty but also for history related to its construction as well. 96 kilometers railway line not only connects Kalka and Shimla but also passes through 20 picturesque stations, 102 tunnels, more than 800 bridges, and 900 curves.

Kalka Shimla Toy Train railway line is designed in such a way that its wheel does not skid during heavy rains. Due to these facts on 2nd July 2008 UNESCO’s world heritage decided to add Kalka Shimla Railway to the world heritage list and later on 9th November 2008 it was officially declared by UNESCO.

The average speed of Kalka Shimla Toy Train is 22 kilometer per hour. The longest tunnel which stretches for more than one kilometer is near the main railway station at Barog, which was named after Engineer Colonel Barog who earlier dug the tunnel from both ends and was unable to align both ends and was fined Rupee 1 for this. And due to shame, he committed suicide inside the incomplete tunnel. 

Station between Kalka and Shimla are Taksal, Gumman, Koti, Sonwara, Dharampur, Kumarhatti, Barog, Solan, Salogra, Kandaghat, Kanoh, Kathleeghat, Shogi, Taradevi, Totu and Summer Hill.
